Band Camp for 2022 is on!!
August 3 - 13, 2022

Please click the file below to download the Newark High School Marching Band Student and Parent Handbook. Read it thoroughly.

Important note from Director Archer:

You cannot miss band camp for vacation. It is a requirement for participation. Consider it summer reading: graded and not optional. Refer to the handbook.
We are a team who all depend on each other every step of the way, and one student’s absence makes all the other students’ jobs harder and have to be repeated.  Please do everything in your power to make sure you are present for every rehearsal block everyday.

Lunch, Snack, and Bonding

Lunch
Students get a break for lunch everyday.  Lunch is not provided.  You are welcome to pack lunch to eat in the cafeteria or go off campus to purchase lunch.  This is a time to regain energy and prepare for the afternoon - and a great time to see you friends socially, outside of rehearsal!

Snack
Breaks are scheduled several times throughout the day to give students a chance to eat, drink, and sit to keep their energy and spirits up throughout the day.  Snack breaks tend to be transitional times.

Bonding
Band Bonding is a relatively structured activity block where students have the opportunity to just do something fun.  Typically not music related.  It can be taking a walk down main street as a section, a water balloon fight, a game of kickball, sitting in the ac telling funny stories, or anywhere in between.  Drum Majors and Section Leaders often plan these activities and gives us a chance to get to know each other while having some fun.

Some of these Bonding Activities are scheduled during lunch as a suggestion that instrumental sections should be eating together and plan to have a follow up activity.

Instruments

Any students borrowing instruments from the school will need to complete a Newark Music Instrument Rental Form each year, per instrument.  The available form is available HERE, and on Schoology.

Things you'll want to make sure you bring:

  1. Sunscreen, Hat, & Sunglasses are REQUIRED for all outdoor activities (which is most of it)
  2. UVA and SPF attire has become widely available and is a recommended option for outdoor rehearsal
  3. Big refillable water jug.  We'll also have water bottles available
  4. Musical Instrument and all of its parts
  5. Lyres/Flip Folders (Required)
  6. Music (available on Schoology)
  7. Sneakers and socks.  Sneakers only - no flip flops, crocs, birks, or slides during marching rehearsal
  8. A shirt change could be nice to break up morning and afternoon outdoor sessions

Band Camp Supplies

As noted above, all musicians (guard and percussion excluded) will need both a Lyre and a Flip Folder for their instruments.  The lyre is a metal clip that attaches to your instrument in order to hold music which is stored in sheet protectors, or a Flip Folder. Percussion need a 3 Ring Binder with Page Protectors.
Drum Majors and Section Leaders will also need a 3 Ring Binder with Page Protectors.

Lyres and flip folders are mainly specific to the instrument.  You can choose to buy yours from any music shop in store (Accent Music, Guitar Center, Music & Arts), online, or purchase directly from Newark Music.  $15 for Folder & Lyre if you choose to buy from us.
  • Flutes - Arm Lyre/Folder in one
  • Clarinets - Lyre and Flip Folder, separate
  • Saxes - Lyre and Flip Folder, separate
  • Brass - Bell Attachment/Folder in one
  • Percussion - 3 Ring Binder with Page Protectors

Students will store all of their marching band music and their drill charts in their Flip Folders for the entire marching season.

Camp Donations

Water Bottles
Water is essential, especially in August heat.  Though the plastic isn't great, we won't be returning to the Water Jug for refills yet this year.  Students will have access the water jug filling station in the school, but for a quick refill mid outdoor rehearsal, it's nice to have some disposable water bottles on hand.  Any donations of Spring Water are greatly utilized and appreciated!

Cool Shade
Because it's August and it will be hot, and we need to be outside.  We are asking if any families are willing to let us borrow
EZ Up Canopies (or the like).  If you have one that you'd be willing to lend us, we would set up during outdoor sessions for short breaks in the shade and store overnight to return to you on August 13th.  Your kids would appreciate the added shade and give thanks to your generosity.

Snacks
Little snacks throughout the day help keep us going!  Though our Boosters will help to provide things throughout the week, if there is anything you or your student would like to share with the group, the band would love to see it!  Fruit, drink, snack bars, fruit snacks, energy bars...things that are easy to grab and go.

Band Camp Goals

We plan to complete the show by the end of band camp, which means we need all students on board, all of the time.  Missing days due to vacation is completely unacceptable and unfair to those students who are present.  I can't over-emphasize the importance of attendance!

It also means completing your summer work of memorizing you music prior to arriving to Band Camp.

Staff Intros:
Assistant Band Director: Thomas Waggner
Guard Directors:  Paula Salvador & Bianca Albu
Battery Director:  Bryce Campbell
Pit Director: Mei Lin Jackson
Drum Majors: Levi Bielewicz & Lee Robell

These folks will be here each day to help us achieve our goals throughout the season.  They will be running activities, keeping us focused, and bringing out the best in us.  They, as am I, are here for you.  Respect them as you would me and thank them for their contribution to the success of the Yellow Jacket Marching Band.  They each have fantastic experiences in the world of music performance to bring to our group.  What an inspirational journey to come!

Community Preview Show

On the last day of Band Camp, we host a Community Preview Show and invite all friends, families, administration, and other teachers to see all of the hard work these students put in throughout Band Camp.  You'll see a snapshot of how the band learns the show and see a culmination of work completed.

Dates and times vary per year and will be shared with you in advance.  Hope to see you there!
Need to Know:
  • READ THE NHS MARCHING BAND STUDENT-PARENT HANDBOOK!! It contains everything you need to know about Newark Music Band Camp, participation in the Newark High School Yellow Jacket Marching Band and how parents can help their children and our highly regarded marching band succeed.
  • The musicians will work hard, but there is lots of fun too which helps them form a strong bond and dynamic team spirit that only gets stronger throughout the year and beyond.
  • Drum majors and section leaders plan special events during the day that may involve funny clothes or hats or ...
  • It's HOT in August.  Wear light colored, loose fitting clothes, comfortable shoes, a hat and sunglasses.  Bring sunscreen and a water jug.
  • The music boosters supply water bottles and occasional treats each day. We are always looking for volunteers.  Any help is greatly appreciated by all.
  • Any parents interested in bringing snacks, EZ-up shades we can borrow for the week (the more the merrier), drinks.  Stop by on occasion to help with hydration/sunscreen/student welfare...helps to have an extra set of eyes.
  • On the final day of band camp, the band will perform their entire show.  Family and friends are encouraged to attend.  You will be amazed and proud.
BE PUNCTUAL!

To be early is to be on time,
to be on time is to be late, and
to be late is show you don't care!
